Surgery Residents

aerial-shot.jpgThe Department of Surgery offers approved residency programs in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Critical Care, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery. All programs are approved by the ACGME and their respective specialty boards.

The primary objective of these programs is to provide superior training in the clinical aspects of each specialty. Program graduates are well prepared to sit for their respective certifying examination. This is accomplished in an academic environment where operative surgery is closely fused with teaching and research. Surgical residents are expected to participate in teaching medical students and their fellow residents. Residents have the opportunity to participate in research during the clinical years. Research fellowships are available for those residents who wish to gain a particularly strong research background in preparation for an academic career.

All programs are resident-friendly and non-pyramidal. Selection is based upon academic records, recommendation letters and interviews without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, marital or veteran status, age, or disability. Residency programs at UMMC require state licensure. Successful completion of Step 2 is required for UMMC employment and Mississippi State Medical Licensure. An applicant without United States citizenship must have a J-1 visa or a Permanent Resident Card in order to be employed as a resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. UMMC will require each resident to submit to a drug screen immediately upon arrival on campus or during the initial orientation program. In keeping with new federal and state laws about health care workers, every new UMMC employee must submit to a background check, fingerprinting and execute an affidavit about prior civil or criminal convictions.

Individualized information for each program can be found on this site. You are encouraged to write to the specific program director for further information.
